The most common causes, explained
1. Verification isn't finished
This is the number one cause. UK casinos verify your identity at sign-up, but many also check your payment method, or ask for proof of address, before your first payout. See our KYC guide.
2. The closed-loop rule
Casinos must return money to the method you deposited with, up to the amount deposited. If you used several methods, your withdrawal may be split between them. If one of them can't receive payouts, such as Paysafecard or pay by phone, you'll need to verify a bank account.
3. Bonus terms
If you claimed a bonus, the casino may hold a withdrawal until the wagering is complete, or remove the bonus winnings if the terms were broken. Examples include exceeding the maximum bet or playing excluded games.
4. Name or details mismatch
Your casino account, card, e-wallet and bank account must all be in the same name. A nickname, a missing middle name or a joint account can all trigger a hold.
How to escalate a withdrawal complaint
- Check your messages and email. The casino may already have asked for something.
- Contact live chat or support and ask for a specific reason and a timescale. Save the transcript.
- Make a formal complaint using the casino's complaints procedure, which every UK licensee must have. Keep it factual and give dates and amounts.
- Go to ADR. If the casino hasn't resolved your complaint within 8 weeks, or you're unhappy with its final response, refer it to the casino's independent Alternative Dispute Resolution provider. It's free, and the casino's terms will name it.
- Tell the Gambling Commission. The Commission doesn't resolve individual disputes, but it does use complaints to identify operators that aren't following the rules.
Template: "I requested a withdrawal of £[amount] on [date] to [method]. My account is fully verified. Please confirm the reason for the delay and the date I can expect payment. If this can't be resolved, please treat this message as a formal complaint under your complaints procedure."
If the casino isn't UK-licensed
If you've been playing at a site without a UK Gambling Commission licence, your options are much more limited. There's no UK ADR body and no UKGC oversight. This is the strongest reason to check for the licence number in the footer before you deposit. Every casino we list is required to hold one.
How to avoid withdrawal problems next time
- Verify your account and payment method as soon as you register.
- Use one payment method that supports withdrawals, ideally a fast one.
- Read the bonus terms, or play without a bonus.
- Keep your personal details consistent everywhere.
