What are financial risk checks?
Financial risk checks help casinos spot customers who may be gambling more than they can afford. They came out of the government's 2023 Gambling Act review White Paper, which asked the Gambling Commission to make sure checks were consistent across the industry and as frictionless as possible for most players.
Casinos have long had a duty to look out for signs of harm. Financial risk checks make the process more structured, using objective data instead of relying only on how you gamble.
Two kinds of check
| Light-touch (frictionless) | Enhanced | |
|---|---|---|
| When | At moderate spending levels | At much higher spending, or when risk indicators appear |
| What's checked | Publicly available and credit reference data, such as CCJs or bankruptcy | A more detailed look at your financial position |
| Will you notice? | No, it happens automatically | Possibly. You may be asked for documents. |
| Credit score impact | None (soft search) | None (soft search) |
The thresholds and how the checks are carried out have been developed through pilots and consultation, so check the Gambling Commission's website for the current position. Individual casinos may also set their own, stricter triggers.
What might trigger a check?
- Your net deposits rising over a rolling period
- A sudden change in how often or how much you deposit
- Large single deposits compared with your usual pattern
- Behaviour that suggests possible harm, such as chasing losses or cancelled withdrawals
Being checked doesn't mean you've done anything wrong. It's routine, and for most players it's resolved without any contact at all.
If you're asked for documents
If a casino needs more information, it will usually ask for recent bank statements or payslips. You can choose not to provide them, but the casino may then limit your account until the check is complete. To keep things moving:
- Upload documents through the casino's secure portal, not by email.
- Provide complete statements. Cropped or edited files are usually rejected.
- Ask exactly what is needed and why. Casinos should explain.
- Remember that your data is protected by UK GDPR, and you can ask how it's stored and used.
Does your payment method matter?
Not for whether you're checked: the checks look at your total spending, not how you pay. But methods linked directly to your bank (debit cards, Pay by Bank, Trustly) make your activity easy to match to a bank statement if documents are requested. Spreading deposits across several e-wallets and vouchers can make the casino's job harder, and the check slower.
A balanced view
Some players find financial checks intrusive, particularly when they can comfortably afford what they spend. Their purpose is to catch harm early for the minority who are struggling, while keeping friction low for everyone else. If you'd rather avoid enhanced checks altogether, the simplest way is to set your own deposit limit at a level you're comfortable with.
Frequently asked questions
Do casino affordability checks affect my credit score?
No. The checks use a soft search, which is not visible to lenders and does not affect your credit rating.
Why is a casino asking for my bank statements?
It may be carrying out an enhanced financial risk check or a source-of-funds check as part of its legal duties. Upload documents through the casino's secure portal.
Can I refuse an affordability check?
You can choose not to provide documents, but the casino may restrict your account until the check is completed.
Are affordability checks a legal requirement?
Licensed casinos have a regulatory duty to identify and act on financial risk and harm. Financial risk checks are the Gambling Commission's framework for doing this consistently.
